| Smith and Butterfield is a company with over 130 years of history in the Evansville, Indiana, Southeastern Illinois and Western Kentucky market area. |
Founded in 1866 by George C. Smith, we started in downtown Evansville as Young American News Depot. Smith’s business was THE place to find all the latest news of the day.
In 1882, A.S. Butterfield, a successful book and fine stationary salesman, joined George Smith and started Smith and Butterfield. Together, they expanded their business to include office supplies, photo finishing, duplicating machines and services.
After the death of George Smith in 1922, the business was solely owned by the Butterfield family. We continue to honor George Smith’s contribution and dedication by keeping his name on the business.
The company has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Ohio River Flood of ‘37, and four generations.
